Introduction
In 1999 the Heritage &
Arts Section of Warwick District Council initiated an innovative
programme of exhibitions, events, collections and educational
projects uniting medical science and the visual arts. The Medicate
programme reflects the importance of the medical
treatments carried out at the Royal
Pump Rooms in the past and their impact on Leamington Spa.
It will also enable links to be made with the emerging cultural
quarter in Leamington Spa.
The Royal Pump
Rooms attracts thousands of visitors from Britain and
abroad who were either treated in the building or who
are interested in art or the architectural and social
history of spa towns. The programme complements the
history of the building and our collection of historic
medical equipment.
The programme is centred
around the interchange of ideas between artists and
medical scientists/healthcare professionals. This programme
is seen as having huge potential to contribute towards
the development of new audiences for the Art Gallery
& Museum as well as those for the arts and medical
science nationally. It will also strengthen the Arts'
potential to contribute to holistic approaches to positive
health. |
