History
De Normanville Swimming Pool

A large second swimming pool was added to the Royal Pump Rooms and opened in 1890. William de Normanville, the Borough Surveyor who designed the pool, installed two sprays into the unique iron roof structure– these showered water onto the bathers below. Until about 1950 it was used by male swimmers, after this it was used by both sexes.

In the winter the pool was covered with boards and functioned as the 'Winter Hall' for dances and other entertainment.

The pool closed in 1990 following the opening of a new public swimming pool in Newbold Comyn Leisure Centre. It was converted into a public library as part of the redevelopment of 1997-99.
