The Ladies Pool

The Ladies pool as a pyhsiotherapy pool

The Ladies Pool converted into the the therapool. (M4480.1998.12)

The Ladies Pool was the first swimming pool at the Royal Pump Rooms and was added, along with the Hammam, in 1863 as part of the renovations by the Leamington architect John Cundall. It was used on alternate days by men and women until 1890 when a new larger pool was built.  The larger pool was then used by men and the smaller pool was reserved for women and children, becoming known as the Ladies Pool.

In about 1950 the Ladies Pool was partly filled-in and a ramp was installed to create a pool for physiotherapy treatments. The new National Health Service used it to treat patients with rheumatism and polio.

As part of the redevelopment of the Royal Pump Rooms in 1997-99 the Ladies Pool was converted into the Art Gallery.
