Medicate
1+1=1 by Jordan Baseman
Jordan Baseman's films sensitively draw out the
idiosyncrasies of human life and behaviour. He often films his
subjects in their own homes or workplaces to create a narrative
of their lives and dreams. Under The Blood and 1+1=1
were commissioned jointly by the Art Gallery at the Royal Pump
Rooms and Wysing Arts and were screened for the first time at
both venues. The two films were the result of a residency at
Papworth Hospital near Cambridge, initiated by the galleries
and funded by the Collaborative Arts Unit of the Arts Council
of England. Baseman worked at the hospital between May and August
2002 alongside Mr Francis Wells, one of their leading cardio-thoracic
surgeons. During the residency he filmed nearly 50 hours of
surgery and talked to patients after their operations.
1+1=1
features an interview with Patrick Wilkins who received a heart
and hung transplant at Papworth in 1998 and is a key supporter
of the hospital. He relates his dreams and experiences in the
moments before and months after the operation. We listen to
Pat, accompanied by his wife Christine, as we watch an unidentifiable,
semi-organic form rotate, move, grow and recede. The black and
white moving image appears to be old, yet it is digitally manipulated.

The white light that emanates from the form is
combined with Pat's moving and often frightening account of
his procedure to create a beautiful and powerful work.

of Fine Art at Goldsmiths College, London. His early sculptures
