Sick Sticks by Laura Glassar

Sick Sticks reveal the hidden but sometimes deadly consequences of society's obsession with beauty and the ideal body.  To portray her feelings about anorexia and bulminia she designed and made these very beautiful sticks for the bulimic to use, almost like a surgical instrument to push down their throat and induce vomiting.

Laura Glassar (born 1975) studied at Aberdeen and then Glasgow School of Art.  Her work has been exhibited in Scotland and England including the touring exhibitions Sense of Occasion and Fluid organised by The City Gallery, Leicester and Wolverhampton Art Gallery and at the British Museum.

This work was purchased with the support of a grant from The Wellcome Trust.
