Jane Dixon - Parallel Objects
3 March to 16 April 2001

Jane Dixon's haunting images are powerful reminders of the vulnerability of the human body and the physical restraints we inflict upon it.

The human body is rarely seen, instead we are left with the empty containers, the machines and clothes we have invented to protect or manipulate our bodies: iron lungs, steam baths, corsets, helmets and armour. She treats these in the same way the body is handled by medical science. They are painstakingly unstitched, dissected and X-rayed and reinvented in a highly controlled technique of drawing and painting on layers of skin-like sheets of waxed and varnished Japanese paper.

The large scale of the drawings, their apparent fragility and the powerful images heighten the viewer's body awareness and physical senses reminding one of how their loss feels.

Jane Dixon studied at West Surrey College of Art and Design, Farnham and the Royal College of Art, London. Exhibitions of her work include shows at: Kettle's Yard, Anne Faggionato and The Jerwood Painting Prize. Her work can also be found in the collections of the Arts Council, Leeds City Council and Oriel Mostyn, Llandudno and the V&A. She was  Kettle's Yard/New Hall Artist Fellow in 2000-2001.

Jane Dixon: Parallel Objects was organised by Kettle's Yard, Cambridge.
