Jane
Dixon - Parallel
Objects
3 March to 16 April 2001
Jane
Dixon's haunting images are powerful reminders of the vulnerability
of the human body and the physical restraints we inflict
upon it.
The
human body is rarely seen, instead we are left with
the empty containers, the machines and clothes we have
invented to protect or manipulate our bodies: iron lungs,
steam baths, corsets, helmets and armour. She treats
these in the same way the body is handled by medical
science. They are painstakingly unstitched, dissected
and X-rayed and reinvented in a highly controlled technique
of drawing and painting on layers of skin-like sheets
of waxed and varnished Japanese paper. |

The
large scale of the drawings, their apparent fragility
and the powerful images heighten the viewer's body awareness
and physical senses reminding one of how their loss
feels.
