Donation boxes
in art galleries and museums are not a new idea but
trying to inventively encourage people to give their
money is a fairly new development. With the opening
of the newly restored Royal Pump Rooms, Leamington Spa
came a new commission, funded by Warwick District Council
and West Midlands Arts. Keith Newstead is a respected
Automata maker and has previously produced donation
boxes for public buildings. His work has featured in
the Craftspace Touring exhibition Devious Devices,
shown in 1999.
The Automata, entitled Rejuvenation,
shows two nurses controlling the water flow into a bath
over a balding sickly patient. When the patient reappears
from underneath the water he has been miraculously rejuvenated
and has a full head of hair, muscles and a tan. This
transformation is being closely watched by Boss, the
Pump Room Cat, who was adopted by the physiotherapy
staff at the Royal Pump Rooms. The architecture of the
Pump Rooms has been echoed through the design of the
room shown within the automata and the casing that houses
it. |
