Well, One Thousand Lights

| Well, One Thousand
Lights by David Ward. |
In September 1997 the beginning of the redevelopment of the
Royal Pump Rooms was marked by Well, One Thousand Lights, a temporary
installation by David Ward. Ward flooded the empty and neglected
swimming pool with light by suspending 1000 lights within the
space, reflecting the depth of the pool and glittering of light
on water. The nature of the installation changed throughout the
day and night as natural light filtered through the skylights
in the pool’s roof.
In January 2005 Well, One Thousand Lights was cited by Sue
Hubbard of The Independent as one of the top 20 works of public
art in The Independent. The list includes the new B of the Bang
in Manchester and The Angel of the North in Tyneside. The
inclusion of Well, One Thousand Lights was a particular achievement
since the other works on the list are permanent.
The project was organized by the Public Art Commissions Agency
and funded by West Midlands Arts and Warwick District Council.
